The Farm
Guests are welcome to watch the cows being milked from a viewing gallery on our organic dairy farm. We supply Omsco which is the largest organic milk supplier in the UK.
By being organic our farm has had no pesticides or herbicides which kill soil organisms, insects and weeds hence there are more food sources for animals, birds and insects. The only input onto the land is compost made from the animals dung and straw from the bedding in the winter.
Organic milk has been proven to be a lot healthier for you and has more Omega 3 in it than non-organic milk.
We also have a flock of Charollais sheep and during the spring time we have lots of lambs skipping around.
Since 1976 Graham and his brother David Ward have been involved with Farms for City Children, a unique project which brings 8-11 year olds from inner cities into contact with rural life. They stay at Nethercott House in school term time and are looked after by teachers and staff. They get involved in everything necessary to keep the farm going including feeding the cows, calves and lambs, grooming ponies, feeding poultry, pressing apples.  They learn where their food comes from, sustainability and to be a good citizen.
On the weekend afternoons we serve cream teas and cakes in our conservatory and open a small country park and museum in our converted old cob barn. The museum is based around the bookWar Horse published in 1982 and written by local author Michael Morpurgo who was inspired after talking to First World War veteran Wilfred Ellis almost 30 years ago. The book has since been turned into a play in the West End of London,  Broadway in New York and recently Melborne, Australia.
War Horse has now been made into a film directed by Steven Spielburg which was released in the UK in 2012 where several scenes were shot on Dartmoor.
War Horse Valley Farm & Country Park
